The American Dental Association offers a series of recommendations to help ensure you can maintain long-term, good oral health. While your twice-annual dental checkup and cleaning at Bel Air Smile Partners are certainly critical, a consistent daily oral hygiene routine is your first line of defense.

This starts with brushing your teeth twice each day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste that has been fortified with fluoride and micro-abrasives. When brushing, you should try to focus on working the bristled head in a circular motion around each face of the tooth.

The ADA also advocates flossing each evening to remove stray food material and plaque buildup from between your teeth and along the gumline. Be sure to also focus on flossing behind your last molar.

While the ADA does not specifically address it in their guidelines, further measures can also help increase the effectiveness of your daily oral hygiene routine. This can include a vigorous rinse with antiseptic mouthwash and a tongue cleaning.

Cleaning your tongue can be as simple as brushing it with your wetted toothbrush. There are also special tongue scrapers sold by some oral product manufacturers. This is typically a small plastic handle with a mild edge on one side. You should work from front to back making multiple overlapping sweeps. If you notice a buildup of material on the blade edge, you should rinse it off before making another pass over your tongue.
